A heritage of strength and unity

The Washington Family

The Washington Family holds a rich and extraordinary history, woven with the threads of resilience, perseverance, and enduring love. Our ancestral roots run deep in the soil of James Island, South Carolina, where generations of Washingtons have lived, worked, and built a legacy of community and strength. Our family tree has blossomed, forming connections with the Scott and Chisolm families, and many other proud descendants who have made their mark both locally and beyond. Welcome Home!

Here, you'll find stories of our ancestors and historical documents that capture the essence of our lineage. You will also discover the many branches of our extended family, spread across Charleston and far beyond, who continue to uphold the values passed down from one generation to the next.
Based on oral history and other historical documents gathered, the earliest ancestor we can currently identify is Richard Washington of Edisto Island, South Carolina, a region known as The Low Country.
Richard Washington
Richard Washington was born about 1858 (just a few years before the emancipation of slaves in 1862) in Edisto Island, South Carolina. There is no record if he was born to free parents. He had four sons and three daughters with Daphney Grant between 1875 and 1900. He died on July 8, 1929, in James Island, South Carolina, at the age of 71. Their children include: Roxy Washington (Scott), Ben Washington, Celia Washington (Chisolm), George Washington, Jacob Washington, Charles Washington, and Eloise Washington (Toglio).
South Carolina Lowcountry
The Lowcountry is a geographic and cultural region located along South Carolina's coast. The region includes the South Carolina Sea Islands. Once a location that was known for its agricultural wealth, the Lowcountry today is internationally renowned for its historic cities and communities, its natural beauty, and its unique cultural heritage, which have attracted millions of visitors and thousands of new residents.
